About Wayne

Writings, audio, and pictures from Wayne Clarke

I’m a Baptist minister, writer and broadcaster. I’m the author of  ‘A Ready Man’, the biography of Hugh Stowell Brown, published by Instant Apostle in September 2019.

Since January 2018 I’ve been the Pastor at Trinity Baptist Church in Gorton, in Manchester, UK. Before that I was minister at New North Road Baptist Church in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. For eighteen years up to 2012 I was based in Liverpool where I worked for the BBC as a radio presenter and producer at BBC Radio Merseyside. I presented the popular religious affairs programme “Daybreak” among others. I was also minister at Dovedale Baptist Church.

I’m interested in society and science and history and people and places and technology. I listen to loads of podcasts. I’m passionate about communicating relevant Christian faith. I love quizzes and music. I can’t get enough of Christmas. I adore Amsterdam and the Netherlands. I love my wife Val and my children (should I have mentioned them first?). I was born in the Midlands but I’m now a committed Northerner.

This blog is about the two topics I’m writing about most. One is the Victorian preacher Hugh Stowell Brown. The other is the history and traditions of Christmas, about which I’ve become an accidental expert.

If you want get in touch I’m on email here

I also run the Faith in Manchester website, so go over there and have a look at that.

  1. Hi Wayne. Great to hear about your Stowell Brown biog – well done in completing it and getting a publisher!

Can you please help me with a festive query. Joan and I have a Christmas card from Jim and Gill – but we seem to have lost their address. Can you please oblige?

Email me at dstuckey64@btinternet.com or joanstuckey@btinternet.com

PS Your current address would be useful too …

  2. Hi Ruth
Lovely to hear from you. I haven’t been able to make contact with any of HSB’s family other than Chris Brown in Wirral. Which branch of the family are you from?
I’ve done most of the research for the book but the writing has been held up halfway through. If you email me at wayne@wayneclarke.org I’ll get back to you.
The statue has been packed into a crate for safe keeping, and for restoration when Liverpool City Council have the funding to do it. But it is now in their care and not getting any worse.

  3. I would be very interested to know when your biography is completed – and published? of my great great grandfather, Hugh Stowell Brown. Do you know if anything has been done yet to restore the statue? The last I heard of it a few years ago was that it was lying in a sort of builder’s knackers yard.
    Best wishes
    Ruth (Facer)
